The Mountain State Update

Fellow West Virginians,

Only Americans should be voting in American elections. House Republicans took a critical step to securing our elections and enacting major election integrity reforms last night! I proudly voted for the SAVE America Act, which passed the House, 218 - 213.

TWEET: On to the Senate Now. Let's Get This Done!

West Virginians continue to be deeply concerned about the integrity and security of our country’s elections. I am sure you have read the stories from states around the nation indicating that thousands of foreign nationals, dead people, and other ineligible voters have influenced our elections. It is absolutely essential that the American people have confidence that our nation’s elections are secure and that their vote counts.

This crucial piece of legislation addresses these concerns and provides much-needed confidence back in our election systems. The bill requires all states to ensure voters are American citizens before registering to vote. The bill also directs states to clean their voter rolls and remove noncitizens and other ineligible voters from the states’ voter rolls. There are meaningful accountability measures to ensure that election officials will be held accountable if they fail to comply with the law’s citizenship-verification requirements. Finally, the bill includes a provision overwhelmingly supported by Republicans, Independents, and Democrats - voter ID. Individuals will need to show a photo ID in order to cast a ballot in any election.

I proudly cosponsored this important bill, and I will always fight to ensure that only American citizens vote in American elections. Every West Virginian can now be confident that our elections are secure and that their vote counts.

TWEET: Proud to Cosponsor and Vote For the SAVE America Act

In 2024, Republican candidates ran on protecting the sanctity of the ballot, especially as tens of millions of illegal aliens were allowed to enter our country under President Biden’s open-border policies. The time to deliver on that campaign promise is now.

By passing the SAVE America Act, we are taking a vital step to keep our elections fair, transparent, and reserved only for Americans. As your Congressman, I remain committed to securing credible and trustworthy elections.

On to the Senate. Let’s get this done!

The Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026

On Monday, I proudly joined Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ), the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Africa Subcommittee, in introducing the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, to address the horrific persecution of Christians across Nigeria. During my time in Congress, I have called attention to the systemic persecution our brothers and sisters in Christ face in Nigeria dating back to at least 2009. Estimates indicate between 50,000 and 125,000 Christians have been martyred, with more than 19,000 Christian churches attacked or destroyed. You can read the bill in its entirety below:

READ: The Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026

This important piece of legislation calls on the Secretary of State to compile and send to Congress an annual report on U.S. efforts to address Christian persecution and mass atrocities in Nigeria. The bill also seeks to counter China’s “hostile foreign exploitation” of Nigeria through its illegal mining operations. The legislation also recommends specific Nigerian individuals and entities tied to the persecution against Christians to be targeted for sanctions.

Cosponsors of the legislation include House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK), House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast (R-FL), Appropriations Subcommittee on National Security and Related Programs Chairman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), and Foreign Affairs South and East Asia Subcommittee Chairman Bill Huizenga (R-MI). I spoke more about the bill here:

READ: Exclusive Reporting from the Daily Caller on my New Bill

I have traveled to Nigeria and engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups across the country, and IDPs, to get a better understanding of the rampant persecution of Christians in Nigeria. These conversations have resulted in increased coordination and cooperation between the United States and Nigeria, creating the U.S.-Nigeria Working Group and securing to uphold humanity and safeguard religious freedom in our recently passed FY26 NSRP Appropriations Bill. I joined ‘The Faulkner Focus’ to shine more light on these issues.

While there is more work to be done, I am grateful for President Trump’s and Congressman Smith’s steadfast leadership on this issue, and I look forward to continue working with them to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ from all forms of persecution.

From the Ground Up: Securing Critical Mineral Independence

Last Wednesday, Congress passed H.R. 4090 - the Critical Mineral Dominance Act, codifying several of President Trump’s Executive Orders ensuring American mining dominance and paving the way for good-paying, union jobs to remain in West Virginia.

TWEET: American Resources = American Jobs

Currently, our adversaries dominate the production and processing of minerals critical to our national security and economic future. In fact, reports indicate roughly 80 percent of rare earth minerals used in the United States were imported from abroad in 2024. The Critical Mineral Dominance Act reverses the trend of increasingly burdensome and ideologically motivated regulations that impede our nation from utilizing the abundance of natural resources below our feet to secure a reliable supply of minerals necessary for the United States to continue being a leader in the world of next generation technology. You can read the entirety of the bill here:

READ: H.R. 4090 - the Critical Mineral Dominance Act

Specifically, this bill accelerates approvals for priority mining projects, directs the Department of Interior to accelerate geologic mapping efforts and alleviates American industry from a regulatory regime that hinders mining projects and slows mineral development.

It is crucial for the security and sovereignty of the United States to cultivate a mineral mining sector capable of providing for a strong national defense, a robust economy, a resilient manufacturing base, and secure domestic supply chains. As your representative, I will always support legislation that protects American workers from import dependencies and rebuilds an American industrial base that sustains middle-class, family-sustaining jobs.
